Reefs Right From the Shore
Unlike many Red Sea resorts that require a boat trip to reach good reefs, large stretches of Marsa Alam's coastline drop straight into coral just steps from the sand — so-called "house reefs" that let guests snorkel world-class waters without ever boarding a boat. The reefs here are also noticeably healthier and more colorful than some busier stretches of coast further north, a direct result of lower visitor numbers and the area's more recent development as a tourist destination.
Swimming With Dugongs
Marsa Alam is one of the very few places in the world where snorkelers and divers have a realistic chance of encountering a dugong — a gentle, slow-moving marine mammal related to the manatee that grazes on seagrass beds just offshore. Abu Dabbab Bay in particular is known for regular sightings, along with resident green sea turtles that share the same shallow, grassy waters. Dolphin encounters are common too, especially at Samadai Reef (Dolphin House), where a resident pod of spinner dolphins can often be seen from the surface.
A Quieter Pace of Resort Life
Marsa Alam's airport only opened in 2001, and the town remains far smaller and less built-up than Hurghada or Sharm, with fewer large nightlife strips and a more spread-out collection of boutique and all-inclusive resorts. That makes it a natural fit for couples and travelers prioritizing peace and genuine nature over bars and shopping malls. Inland, the Eastern Desert and its Bedouin communities are easily reached for a day trip, rounding out a stay that pairs some of the Red Sea's best marine life with a calmer, slower holiday rhythm.
